What is Paint Correction?

11/19/2019

Paint correction is the process of polishing painted surfaces on automobiles to remove defects to get your paint looking the best it can. Swirls, scratches, oxidation, and water spots all distort the appearance of the paint underneath. Think of the paint on your vehicle like a flat plot of land; these defects appear as valleys or divots in that plot of land and reflect the light differently. To get the most shine and mirror-like reflections, the light needs to reflect directly back off the surface.

Now, let’s talk about how you get these defects. Swirls, scratches, oxidation, and water spots are the most common defects found on our automobiles paint.

Swirls look like spider webs in your paint when looking at it in direct sunlight or under proper LED lighting. In reality, they are thousands of straight scratches going every which way. They can be caused by tunnel car washes, improper washing/drying, or the famous “dry wipe” after a drive or before a car show to knock the dust off.
Oxidation occurs when the paint has had little to no protection on it and has been abused by the UV rays from the sun and will begin to make the paint look dull, faded, and sometimes cloudy.
Water spots are left behind after washing with hard water, not drying the vehicle completely or from those automatic car washes. They look like small circles that have eaten into the clear coat of your vehicle after the water has dried. Washing again or trying to wipe them clean won’t cut it and can often damage the paint further.

Machine polishing and sanding removes a tiny fraction of clear coat around these imperfections, therefore, leveling the clear coat around it, making it invisible.

Tip of the week 1/29/18

1/29/2018

The best/safest way to remove snow from your vehicle before driving is some sort of forced air! Leaf blower, master blaster, air compressor, etc.

The brushes with ice scrapers on the other end do just that to your paint, scrape and scratch it up!

Driven To Cue - Nissan GTR

1/26/2018

Notice how the caked on dirt covering the Driven To Cure one off Nissan GTR effortlessly washes off. Notice the water behavior, how it just beads up and blows right off! Just a couple benefits of a ceramic coating!

Gtechniq crystal serum black applied early last year. This beast hasn't been properly washed in well over a month and as you can see, it gets driven! Leaving the surface SUPER slick so water spots, dirt, bugs, tar whatever it is doesn't stick for long! Super easy to maintain. Unrivaled gloss and shine. A no brainer when it comes to protection!

Crustless Media and I threw around a few ideas I had for a video to display the amazing features of our ceramic coating line up and he sends me this fire! Always a big shout out to them!

Tip Of The Week - 1/15/18

Use a pumas stone to remove pesky pet hair that is stuck to your carpets/upholstery! The pumas stone grips the hair and quickly pulls it to the top of the carpet fibers and vacuum follows for easier clean up.

1999 Pontiac Trans-Am Paint Correction & Coating

11/25/2016

This one owner, 1999 Pontiac Trans-Am arrived at our shop in Silver Spring with 34,000 original miles. The owner wanted to have the paint restored to it's original beauty and now I think it's better than when it rolled off the assembly line. The only picture that this owner had of the car was from 16 years ago. After we did this paint correction and coating we sent our friends at Crustless Media over to help get them some professional photos of this gorgeous car.

The Pontiac came in with heavily oxidized paint, deep scratches and a lot of swirls throughout the paint. Our three step paint correction easily took care of all of these issues and with the application of gTechniq Crystal Serum Light topped off with the gTechniq EXOv3, this paint will now be protected, look this good and easily cleaned for the next 5-7 YEARS!

In the before and after pictures below you can see that over the years this car has most likely brushed up against tree branches overhanging the road, had keys miss the key hole to open the door, and it even looked like a razor blade was used to remove something along the side fender.  These issues didn't stand a chance against our process!

The three stages of this paint correction included two stages of heavy cut compounding to remove defects deep in the paint. The third stage which refines the paint, enhances the depth & clarity of the paint and removes the trails left behind by our buffer.

Selected Team Member of Air Force One Detail Team!

9/13/2014

Here are a few shots of one of the coolest projects I have ever been apart of! This year I was hand selected out of thousands of detailers nationwide to be on the coveted Air Force One Detail Team. This was the very first jet engine Air Force One that President Eisenhower took delivery of in 1959. President Kennedy flew down to Texas before he was assassinated and President Johnson was also sworn in as the next US President on this very plane that we polished! These two presidents were among many heads of state and other VIP's to ride on this piece of history.

Along with polishing the fuselage, wings, crown and engines of Air Force One we also had the opportunity to polish out the Concorde Alpha Golf. The Concorde currently holds the world speed record for flying from New York to its current home at the Museum of Flight in Seattle, WA. The paint on the Concorde was heavily oxidized and dull. Air Force One was in better shape thanks to the team that detailed it last year and gave it a nice layer of protection. Armed with Flex polishers and Sonax polishes me and 34 other seasoned detailers had no problem at all bringing back the original shine and luster to both of these historic planes!
